Walk Safely On Snow And Ice
This time of year, we see an uptick in chiropractic visits from people slipping and falling on ice. To help you avoid pain and injury, we have put together these tips for walking safely on snow and ice:
Plan Ahead
You may need time to clear off your car or clear a path. Remember traffic moves more slowly in snowy and icy weather.
Wear Shoes or Boots That Provide Traction
Smooth soles, plastic soles, and leather soles provide the least amount of traction. Opt for rubber soles, especially with textured soles that provide grips. Consider removable cleats that can be attached to your shoes.
Enter/Exit Cautiously
Pulling and pushing doors, as well as getting in and out of a vehicle, can cause you to lose your balance on slippery ground. Try to keep your center of gravity over the leg that is most supporting your weight. Move slowly, and use handrails or hold onto your car for support.
Stay On Designated Paths
Look ahead and watch where you are going. Don’t text or read while walking, and keep your hands out of your pockets.
Walk Safely On Snow and Ice
Take short steps or shuffle your feet along the ground. Bend slightly forward and stay flat-footed to balance your center of gravity over your feet.
How To Fall Safely
If you do start to fall, bend your knees and try to land sitting down or on the side of yout thigh/hip. You may then try to roll toward your shoulder to avoid direct impact. Avoid trying to catch yourself with outstretched arms. Bend your back and tuck your head to avoid hitting it against the ground.
We hope you can avoid serious injury this winter, but if you do fall, we’re here for you!
